French auteur Luc Besson’s 1996 masterpiece is an iconic space adventure unrivaled in substance and style. Come join us for a cruise through the cosmos with The Fifth Element.
We’re kicking of a residency at Roosevelt to bring The Fifth Element to life in a unique viewing experience. Come early for our custom themed photo-op, pre-show trivia, vinyl DJ set, and fun food and bev specials from Roosevelt’s team.
Pre-Show Fun
Arrive early and settle in before we launch into the cosmos. The evening will feature a themed photo experience, a vinyl DJ set, and a specially curated Fifth Element-inspired food and drink from the Roosevelt team.
ABOUT THE FILM
It’s the year 2263. Space travel is normal, earth’s geopolitical powers rule the planet collectively, and good takeout still exists in NYC. But the class divide is worse than ever. And there’s a small problem: the world as humans know it is about to end unless a team of unlikely heroes can piece together a 5000-year-old puzzle and defeat a dastardly weapons tycoon in time to save the planet - and even then, is there enough humanity left to even warrant saving it?
Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in this equal parts comedy, action, sci-fi, romance packed adventure through space and time. Alongside these established and emerging leads are Chris Tucker (Rush Hour), Ian Holm (Alien, Lord of the Rings), and - if you pay attention - a cameo from Massive Attack collaborator Tricky.
Aside from the exquisite cast bringing Besson’s world to life are costumes done by enfant terrible fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who also designed Madonna’s iconic cone bra, turned corsets into outerwear, and pioneered putting men back in skirts. The fashion of The Fifth Element is a character in its own right.
Completing the immersive and immense world of The Fifth Element are the sounds and set designs. There is a truly bitchin’ score by frequent Besson collaborator, Éric Serra, that succeeds in creating a unique soundscape that is the antithesis of any other score for a movie about a normal guy turned space hero. The sets are colorful, playful and oddly grounded.
Honestly, we would be so lucky to live in a world come 2263 that looks (or feels) anything like this, even if we have to lose our marbles a little bit to get there.
