This screening will be hosted by Roosevelt in Downtown Phoenix! They’ve taken over what used to be the Film Bar, to honor the space’s roots they have invited CINEHAZE to host movie nights. We’re grateful to them for their collaboration.
About the Movie
Loosely inspired by The Canterbury Tales and the IRL early life of the First Earl of Pembroke, A Knight’s Tale is set in the 14th century, we follow a squire and his mates after their master dies unexpectedly, leaving them in a bit of a lurch for how to make a living. Because the squire (Heath Ledger) is a pretty decent jouster, they decide to pretend their master is still alive by donning his armor and competing as him in knight competitions across medieval Europe. Along the way, they become friends with a certain unknown writer by the name of Chaucer (the guy who wrote Canterbury Tales), a woman blacksmith (gasp!) who pens the Nike swoosh, and a very historically-dressed lady with the best tiny hats in any movie this author can think of. Together, they strive to reach for their proverbial stars.
The thing that makes this period piece really stand above the rest is the music. This is a movie set in the past that uses the music of Queen and David Bowie (among others, you’ll see/hear on the 10th when you come out). The crowd stomps along to “We Will Rock You” ahead of a joust, and Ledger and his paramour make up a dance during a party to “Golden Years.” It really brings the (imagined) past to life in a memorable way.
